Pond de-icers will ensure that your garden pond has a “breathing hole” all winter long. Why do you need this hole? It will allow toxic gases to escape into the winter air while allowing oxygen to come in.

Without a pond de-icer, your fish my become diseased, stressed, or even dead!

Some people think that the point of pond heaters and de-icers is to keep the fish warm and happy all winter long, but this is not true. Most fish go into an inactive dormant state (similar to hibernation) during the colder months. You should allow them to reach this state.

And, in fact, once the water temperature drops to about 50 degrees Fahrenheit, you do not want to feed your fish. They can not digest food when they are in a dormant state.
