Speeds nitriciation. Porous pore structure gives these rings many times more surface area. Optimum surface area supports large bacterial colonies. Does not break down like other media. Contains select strains of Nitrosomonas, Nitrospira, and Nitrobacter -- allows for conversion from ammonia to nitrite, nitrite to nitrate.
