While not essential for garden ponds, the use of pond skimmers can really help remove debris from the surface of the pond. Even something as small and seemingly harmless as grass can cause water clarity problems downs the road.

By using pond skimmers, you can be sure to take care of floating debris before it ever sinks to the bottom, starts to decay, and really becomes a problem.

They work by creating a skimming action (via a pump). The water goes through a mesh basket which catches the debris that has been sucked into the skimmer unit.
